The narrative on that national question, if he asks. He hangs out with the locals under the name ‘Joshua’, All you need is to trust him and run to him with your problems.
Aman/Joshua whitelists the entire history of political movements throughout north-eastern India, which he justifies by telling one official, “Probably, no one wants peace. Anek Movie Review
Anek, meaning ‘many’ is a case of good intention (probably). And that is the best that can be said about this Ayushmann Khurrana starrer as a police officer and his covert operation to work out a peace deal between a rebel group and the Indian government. Anubhav Sinha’s Anek is a layered narrative about attempts to negotiate a peace treaty in the Northeast with a separatist group, a process that has gone on for decades without any conclusion. A secret operative, Aman (Ayushmann Khurrana), who goes by the alias Joshua, is tasked with creating a situation where,
Which brings the region’s top rebel leader Tiger Sangha (Loitongbam Dorendra) to the negotiating table. Along the way, Aman finds that everything is not as black and white as he initially thought and finds himself emotionally and professionally conflicted.Continuing a long tradition of misrepresenting stories and narratives. The inclusion of faces from Assam, Nagaland and Manipur is a positive step after years of actors who are not seen playing people from the region on screen. With some powerful performances from Ayushmann Khurrana, Manoj Pahwa, Andrea Kevichussa, Kumud Mishra, Loitongbam Dorendra and JD Chakraborty, the film leaves the audience with a lot of troubling questions – mainly, what makes you an Indian. The use of silence, regional dialect, folk songs and background scores, production design, visual tone, cinematography and action pieces lend themselves well to the narrative.
