Over the past five years, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has earned Rs 18 lakh through fines collected from commuters found intoxicated. As many as 3,601 commuters have been fined for travelling in an intoxicated state between 2014 and 2018, the DMRC statistics suggest.

DMRC collected a total of 1,416 fines in 2018. In 2017, 476 fines were collected by the DMRC officials. As many as 420 and 531 people were fined for travelling in a drunken state in 2016 and 2015, respectively. In 2014, 758 people were fined. Each offence amounts to a fine of Rs 500.

The DMRC spokesperson said despite installing boards warning people against commuting in a drunken state, many people flout the rules.

A senior Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official said the metro stations near Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Khan Market witness the maximum mumber of commuters entering the metro stations in an inebriated state. The official attributed it to the proximity to pubs, bars and restaurants in these places.

While the DMRC is tasked with the maintenance of the metro infrastructure, the CISF handles the law and order within the metro premises.

The CISF official said that there have been instances when they had to drop tipsy commuters home or to a safe location.

In March last year, the personnel had to drop a woman home after she was not allowed to board the metro train at Samaipur Badli for being ‘too drunk’.

The official said that a tipsy person is allowed to travel if he or she has a friend with him or her. Officials said there have been instances where drunk passengers have got into brawl with passengers and even tried to jump on the tracks.
